NM auditor: $1 billion in taxpayer funds unaudited


o one is watching how one billion taxpayer dollars are being spent. the state minute thumbnail 06:00 pm auditor releases a report saying that dozens of government agencies have failed to submit required audits to the state. investigative reporter jeremy jola is here with why the auditor is sounding the alarm. jeremy. in the wake of the big 3.3 million dollar embezzlement case involving the jemez mountain school district--- the state auditor says there are 90 other agencies in new mexico that have not submitted their required audit reports -- as required by state law. those agencies---hector balderas says---have been labeled "at risk"---and just like the jemez mountain school district, they did not submit yearly audit reports to the state. for now the former business manager of that school, district kathy borrego has not been charged, for allegedly stealing 3.3 million. adding up all of the money that hasn't been reviewed among these 90 other agencies ...one billion dollars according to balderas. and because there haven'been any audits of minute thumbnail 06:01 pm these 90 government agencies, the the auditor says that's a sign there could be waste and abuse. "but most importantly, if they can't comply with state law, it's ve likely they are exposing themselves to a very large amount of a risk of loss and that's what we are trying to prevent here." and speaking of kathy borrego----it doesn't look like she will be charged any time soon. the district attorney for rio arriba ...
